The genuine risks here are the road and the alcohol, and they combine badly: this is a wine region on a busy trunk route carrying heavy freight and long-distance traffic between Yerevan, the south and the Iranian border, and drink-driving limits in Armenia are strict and enforced. Arranging a driver is the single most important safety decision a visitor makes here. Beyond that, the Noravank gorge road is narrow and winding, and the monastery's cantilevered stairs are genuinely exposed with no handrail. Armenia's travel advisories concern the closed eastern border with Azerbaijan; Vayots Dzor sits on the main north–south route well away from the areas named, and nothing in current advisory guidance applies to Areni or Noravank.
