Nightlife
Areni after dark
Areni has no nightlife, and saying so plainly is more useful than dressing it up. The village is small and rural, and the evening consists of dinner at a guesthouse or winery, a bottle of the local wine, and an early night. A handful of producers run tasting rooms that stay open into the evening, particularly during harvest, and these are the closest the village comes to a bar. There are no clubs, no bar street and effectively no venues. The nearest anywhere with an evening choice is Yeghegnadzor, which is ordinary rather than lively. This is entirely appropriate to what Areni is, and travellers wanting an evening out should plan it in Yerevan.
Winery tasting rooms
Several producers keep tasting rooms open into the evening, especially during harvest, and these function as the village's social venues. Wine, conversation with the maker and sometimes food; not a bar in any conventional sense.
Guesthouse tables and terraces
Where the evening actually happens for most visitors: a shared dinner, other travellers and a bottle from the valley. The best company and the best food in the village.
Night safety
There is very little to be concerned about in the village itself, which is quiet and safe. The two genuine risks both relate to wine. The first is driving: Armenia enforces strict limits and the main highway carries fast heavy traffic, so anyone tasting should not be behind a wheel. The second is that home-produced fruit spirit offered by hosts is frequently far stronger than it tastes and is rarely labelled. Street lighting in the village is limited and there are stretches without pavement along the road, so a phone torch is worth having if you walk between guesthouse and winery after dark.
