Gelati Monastery
Gelati, Imereti, Georgia
The twelfth-century monastery and medieval academy founded by David the Builder above Kutaisi, and the only UNESCO World Heritage site in western Georgia.
North-east of Kutaisi on the Tqibuli road, about eleven kilometres by road according to the national tourism administration and under six in a straight line. The road is made the whole way and the final approach climbs to the monastery, which sits on a hill above the Tskaltsitela gorge. Motsameta Monastery is on the same trip, roughly halfway back towards the city, and almost everyone does both.

- A working monastery rather than a museum, so services take precedence over visitors and parts of the complex can be closed without notice. Modest dress is expected: covered shoulders and knees, and a headscarf for women — scarves and wraps are usually available at the gate.
