Place
Martvili Canyon
Gachedili, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Georgia
A limestone canyon on the Abasha river near Gachedili, with a walkway along the water and short boat trips through the narrow section.
About 5 km from Martvili town on a surfaced road, and roughly 34 km in a straight line from Kutaisi — further by road. There is a car park and a managed entrance; the walkway and the boat launch are reached on foot from there.
Getting hereAccessible by standard car
An ordinary hire car reaches this on made roads. No special vehicle is needed.
- · Made roads the whole way
Nearest practical airport: Kutaisi International Airport (KUT)
Road last checked 2026-09-10.
- Time needed
- 1.5–2.5 hours, longer if you wait for a boat
- Opening
- A managed protected area with a staffed entrance, so it follows opening arrangements rather than being open at all hours. The boat runs separately from the walkway and stops in bad conditions.
- Cost
- Entry and the boat are charged separately at the entrance. No figures are recorded here: the tariff has changed more than once and an out-of-date number is worse than none.
Take care
- Wet limestone and wooden decking are slippery, and the water is cold and moving. The boat operates at the site's discretion and is suspended when the river is high.
