Motsameta Monastery
Motsameta, Imereti, Georgia
A small monastery on a rock promontory in a bend of the Tskaltsitela river, a few kilometres from Kutaisi and usually visited on the way to Gelati.
About four and a half kilometres north-east of Kutaisi in a straight line, on a side road off the Tqibuli road — roughly halfway between the city and Gelati, which is why almost nobody comes here on its own trip. The turning is signposted and the last stretch is a narrow lane down to the gorge; the final approach to the gate is on foot, through forest, and is short but steep in places.

- A working monastery. Services take precedence over visitors, modest dress is expected — covered shoulders and knees, and a headscarf for women — and the crypt is a place of veneration rather than an exhibit.
- Parking
- A small area near the entrance tower. It fills up when a tour group is in.
Take care
- The monastery sits on a promontory with steep, largely unguarded drops into the gorge, and the paving and forest path are slippery when wet. Keep children close to the terrace edge.
